Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an extremely poisonous and invisible gas that can be produced when fuels don’t burn properly.
It’s found in the fumes from gas, oil, wood, and solid fuel appliances, and because it can’t be seen, smelled, or tasted, it’s often called “the silent killer.”
At Bell of Northampton, your safety always comes first. Here’s how to protect your home and family from carbon monoxide.

How to Protect Yourself from Carbon Monoxide
Regular maintenance and proper installation are key to keeping your stove or fire safe.
✅ Service your appliance regularly
Book a professional service with a HETAS Registered Installer to ensure your appliance is running safely and efficiently.
✅ Sweep your chimney frequently
Have your chimney cleaned regularly by a HETAS Approved Chimney Sweep or a Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps qualified professional. A clear chimney helps prevent blockages and dangerous fume build-up.
✅ Use the right fuel
Always burn dry wood or kiln-dried logs and avoid using wet wood. Using well-seasoned, quality fuel ensures a clean burn and reduces carbon monoxide risk.
✅ Follow Building Regulations
Ensure your installation meets current Building Regulations guidance – these rules exist to protect you and your home.
✅ Fit a carbon monoxide alarm
Install an audible CO alarm that complies with BS EN 50291 standards, and position it as recommended in Building Regulations Approved Document J.

⚠️ Recognising the Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Early symptoms of CO poisoning often resemble flu or fatigue — making it easy to miss.
Be alert for these warning signs:
- Persistent headaches
- Breathlessness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness or collapse
- Chest or stomach pain
- Erratic behaviour or visual problems
If anyone in your home experiences these symptoms, act fast.

🚨 What to Do if Your CO Alarm Goes Off
If you suspect fumes are escaping or your alarm sounds:
- Close appliance vents to let the fire die down.
- Open doors and windows to ventilate your home.
- Leave the building immediately.
- Call for medical help if you feel unwell:
- NHS England: 111
- NHS Wales: 111
- NHS 24 (Scotland): 111
- Or dial 999 in an emergency and mention carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Have your appliance and chimney checked by:
- A HETAS Registered Installer
- A HETAS Approved or Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps qualified sweep
- Do not use the appliance again until it has been declared safe.
